Kinsey-Pope Garden
This is a garden for strolling, designed to emphasize four-season interest, where paths curve through dappled woodland walks of Japanese Maples, Maidenhair ferns, Azaleas, and sunnier spots offering Roses, Veronicas, Lupines, and Irises. Goshen stone walls and walkways, colorful benches, arbor, and bird baths contribute dramatic structure in all seasons. The view from the copper-topped gazebo provides a panorama of the garden toward the east. Looking quite like a bonsai, an artfully pruned Crab Apple presides over a Japanese inspired bridge spanning the meandering stone-lined swale. Beautiful trees and shrubs abound including Corneliancherry, kousa, and “Wedding-Cake” dogwoods, Katsura, Japanese White Pines, golden ‘Frisia’ Locust, Sargent’s Cherry, Sourwood, and Japanense Clethra, Hydrangeas of many kinds, golden Caryopteris, Winterhazels, and purple Smokebushes. Along the paths are small garden rooms, one with a green marble bench in a shady enclosure providing cool respite, another with a goshen stone bench atop a sunnier stone patio, and a third under the boughs of Climbing Hydrangea overlooking a tiny pond. The entire 1/2 acre garden is enclosed by a cedar fence designed and built by the owners.
